From King Sophia: "It’s time for another episode of Listening B(l)ack!! This Thursday at the Hannan Center I’ll be sharing the music and story of the late Terry Callier — one of the great progenitors of Black folk music. In keeping with Callier’s organic sound and in honor of his debut album which features only acoustic guitar and 2 upright basses, this episode’s trio will include Alex Belhaj on guitar, Michael Abbo on bass, and myself on vocals and cello. We’ll play a specially curated selection of Callier’s music interspersed between the evening’s storytelling. Before the show, we’ll also be screening the award-winning French film, The Intouchables, which features Callier’s music prominently and tells the true story of a wealthy quadriplegic bonding with his caregiver. The goofy buddy comedy has moments of true profundity that are emphasized beautifully by Callier’s music, and the movie eventually became the 2nd highest-grossing French film in France and several other countries. Come through at 3pm for the movie, or join us at 5pm for the deep cuts. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door! See you there!"
